Homemade Sour Cream


Did you know you can make your own sour cream with only two or three ingredients? It’s easy!

All you need is:

2 cups whipping creammilk and lemons

2 Tablespoons of buttermilk

(What? No buttermilk?  – You can make that too!  For a cup of buttermilk, add a tablespoon of lemon juice or vinegar to a cup of regular milk, let it rest for 5-10 minutes or until it curdles).

Pour cream and buttermilk into a sterile glass jar. Screw on lid tightly; shake well.  Let jar stand in a warm place until cream  and soured – about 24 hours in warm weather or 48 hours in cool weather.  After cream thickens, and becomes cultured, cover it and chill several hours or overnight before using.  Whip cream slightly for smoother texture.  Do not over beat.

Makes 2 cups.
